Introduction

For my experiments, I envision myself using the theme of the modern girl. What I mean by that is projects that cover many of the struggles that women face that are either wrongly portrayed in media or that are not covered at all. This topic is important to me because it is personally relevant, but also will allow me to explore alternate views on life and look at the topics discussed from many perspectives, not only my own.

Genre Research

For my genre research, I decided that I would research the structure of Disney childrens’ books, metaphors covered in films like The Princess and the Frog and Tangled, and a deep analysis of the most popular princesses and princes. In addition, I read works by Joyce Carol Oates, as recommended by my classmate Eli, to gauge an understanding of how to structure a short story.

The first two works that I read were short stories from princess.disney.com. I read the short story of Rapunzel and Tiana. I recognize that both stories start in their youth, giving a background that alludes to their personalities, so I plan on employing that. I noticed that in terms of stylistic elements in the writing, transition words are used frequently as the evolution of the story continues. Almost every sentence uses a transition word.

Sketch

The first experiment that I will do is author a short story about a modern-day “Disney princess.” I want to write the story as a day or a few days in the life of a princess who is forced to go to a normal school and do normal things like all other children after a law is enacted. She struggles to fit into her desk chair because of her big, frilly dress and does not know what to do in the game of dodgeball. She will undergo many struggles that only a princess in a normal society would. She will face many pressures of being a girl that all the other girls face.
